Questions and answers
The basics on what meshpup is and how it fits into a Roblox workflow.
What does meshpup cost?
Free right now. Later versions might cost money. The version you download is yours to keep: a new price only counts for new downloads and new versions, never for the one you already have. There is no account either way. Read the Terms
Do I need to know 3D modeling?
No. You pick ready-made parts and they snap together. No Blender, no sculpting. If you can drag and drop, you can build a pet. Your pet arrives in Roblox as one model that stands still, which is all most pet systems need. If you want it to move its legs, that part is yours to add.
How does it work with Roblox?
You export your pet and import the file into Roblox Studio. Then press Assemble Pet in the free plugin the app adds for you, or paste a script instead. Your pet is put together for you: every piece has a name, the pieces are joined, and the face is already on. From there you script it like any other model.
Can my pet have a face?
Yes. Build one from 20+ face pieces: eyes, mouths, noses and highlights. Or bring your own picture. The face is painted onto the pet, so it comes into Roblox Studio with the model. There is no decal to upload.
Can I use my own 3D models?
Yes. Add your own parts from Blender, and your own pictures to paint with. They work right next to the parts that come with the app. Your files stay on your computer; the app never uploads them.
Can I recolor or paint parts?
Yes, in a few ways. Paint on the pet like a drawing. Or click once to cover it in one of 70+ materials, like stone, ice, candy or lava, and change its colors. You can make a material glow, shine or look bumpy. You can also grow things on it: 20+ kinds, like rocks, crystals and flowers. Prefer your own tools? Export the part's flat picture, paint it in another app, and bring it back. Whatever you make goes into Roblox with the pet.
Do the effects work in Roblox?
Yes. An effect is not a video. It is real Roblox particles. Put one of 150+ effects on any part, change it until you like it, and export. The plugin turns it on for you when it puts the pet together. After you update the app, restart Studio once so it picks up the newer plugin.
Can I keep editing a pet later?
Yes, two ways. Every export saves a .altushka preset alongside the .glb — open it in the Builder to pick up exactly where you left off. And if all you have is the Roblox side, export the model from Roblox Studio and import that file straight back into the Builder.
Can I sell what I make with it?
Yes. You own what you make. You can use it in your own games, including ones you earn from, as long as you follow the rules of the platform you publish on and our Terms. Commissions are fine too: make a pet for a client and deliver it for their own games. Parts you import yourself are entirely yours. The one line not to cross: don't resell our parts, or a bare export, as a standalone asset for others to reuse. The full rules are in our Terms of Service. Credit isn't required — but it's appreciated: a line like "pets made thanks to meshpup" in your game description always makes our day.
What do I need to run it?
A Mac running macOS 12 or later (Apple Silicon or Intel), or a 64-bit Windows 10/11 PC. Both versions are published on itch.io, linked from the download page.
Is the app finished?
Not yet. It is new and it keeps getting better, so you may find rough edges. If something looks wrong, or you want a part we don't have, tell us on Discord. Find us in the community
Do I need to be online?
You need internet to grab the catalog and download each part, face and effect the first time you use it. After that they are cached locally so you can keep building, though we can't promise uninterrupted offline use.
How do updates work?
The app checks for new versions and shows a banner when one is out — no background installer. You grab the new build from the itch.io page whenever you're ready; following the project there gets you an email when one ships.
