Materials, Real shape and things that grow

1.5.1 is out for macOS and Windows. It follows 1.5.0, the biggest Paint update so far, which never got a post of its own, so here is both.

Paint with materials

Paint used to lay colour. Now you pick a material and paint or Fill with it, and a stroke lays colour, glow, shine and bumps together. There are 78 of them in the library, in groups like Nature, Gems, Neon, Space, Autumn, Winter and Fun. Any material can be recoloured: the Colours list changes each of its named colours, and Hue, Saturation, Vibrance, Brightness and Contrast are precise steppers. You can also import your own pictures into Mine, and save your settings as presets.

Press T and you are in Paint with Fill and the Material page open.

A new material browser

1.5.1 rebuilds the browser: categories down the left, four materials to a row, search, and a filter drawer. A cloud button shows only the materials already on your computer. Materials now appear at once and download the first time you use one, and each one lays the way it was made, so there is no wrap or world switch to get wrong.

Real shape

Every painted part can now be Off, Bumps or Real shape. Bumps draws a material’s relief with light. Real shape turns it into real geometry for Roblox, with clean edges and a triangle count you can see against Roblox’s 20,000-per-part limit.

Things that grow

Rocks, crystals and shards, roots, craters, mushrooms, four flowers, sprouts, snow, islands, a pumpkin, a gem, a beehive, Christmas lights and tentacles can grow out of a painted part. Each has its own size, amount and colours, a Where (all, top or bottom), and can grow on another kind. Pick a single piece and move, turn or scale it. 1.5.1 gives every kind many more sliders, 134 new ones in all.

Smaller things

  • A Roblox look shading button previews your pet in Studio’s default light.
  • Part names are clean now: Ear L and Ear R, no more “Copy Copy”.
  • The Camera tab can show your pet’s effect in a picture.
  • Big 2048 textures are no longer halved on export, and glow colours carry into Studio.
  • Windows starts faster, the first brush stroke is smoother, and the app uses less CPU and GPU while idle.
  • The VFX browser’s Layers drawer no longer covers the effects, and filter drawers keep their height when you tick a value.

The tutorials have been redone for all of it, starting with Materials and Shape.
